Roosevelt Roberts is a lightweight mixed martial artist competing in the UFC whose story transcends the sport. Born in Miami in 1994, Roberts endured a chaotic childhood marked by domestic violence and homelessness, which led him into the criminal justice system as a youth. At 19, the birth of his daughter became a turning point: he channeled his natural fighting instinct into MMA training and transformed his life. After a dominant 6-1 amateur run, he turned pro in 2016 and compiled a 5-0 record before securing a UFC contract through Dana White's Contender Series in July 2018.

Roberts announced himself in the UFC with a stunning submission debut against Darrell Horcher in November 2018, earning Performance of the Night honors with a first-round guillotine choke. His signature finishing style is rooted in his brown-belt jiu-jitsu pedigree: he trains at Carlson Gracie Temecula and hunts for submissions, particularly armbars and rear-naked chokes, from positions many strikers would overlook. Across his career he has notched 6 first-round finishes and 5 submissions, showcasing technical maturity.

Yet the UFC has proven a tougher proving ground than his regional success suggested. Roberts alternated wins and losses through 2020, including a controversial no-contest with Kevin Croom (overturned after Croom's post-fight drug test) and a brutal first-round loss to veteran Jim Miller. A knockout loss to Ignacio Bahamondes in August 2021 led to his release from the promotion. He regrouped in Eagle FC, claiming a welterweight title in December 2021, before earning a second UFC shot via The Ultimate Fighter 31 (Team Chandler) in 2023. A decisive quarterfinal knockout of Nate Jennerman raised hopes for a second act, but a split-decision loss to Austin Hubbard in the semifinals, followed by first-round submission loss to Mateusz Rebecki and a recent decision loss to Ludovit Klein in September 2024, has left him on the margins of the lightweight roster once again. At 31 and now removed from active UFC competition in early 2025, Roberts faces his biggest comeback challenge yet.

Why fans love Roberts

His personal backstory of overcoming homelessness and incarceration to become a professional fighter inspires deep fan loyalty. Roberts carries himself with humility and gratitude, never making excuses. His submission finishes, especially the flashy guillotine choke debut, showcase technical skill and entertaining fight IQ.
