Sage Northcutt was once considered a potential future star of the UFC. Trained in martial arts from age four and the son of a karate black belt, Northcutt turned professional at 18 and rattled off five straight wins to earn Dana White's attention through the reality series Looking For A Fight. His October 2015 UFC debut at 192 was unforgettable: a devastating 57-second TKO knockout of Francisco Trevino that announced his arrival as an elite prospect. The combination of his athletic striking, good looks, and charismatic personality quickly made him a fan favorite, and 'Super' Sage became one of the promotion's most marketable young fighters.

That promise hit a wall in 2016. Back-to-back submission losses to Bryan Barberena and Mickey Gall exposed defensive vulnerabilities and halted the hype train. Northcutt showed resilience, returning after nearly a year away to earn three consecutive decisions (2017-2018), culminating in an impressive second-round knockout of Zak Ottow in July 2018. However, when his UFC contract expired that fall, Dana White declined to renew it, citing a need for Northcutt to refine his game elsewhere. The rejection stung a fighter who once seemed destined for title contention.

Northcutt signed with ONE Championship in late 2018, but his debut for the promotion in May 2019 turned catastrophic: Cosmo Alexandre knocked him cold in 29 seconds, a blow so severe it fractured eight bones in his face and required surgery. The loss sent Northcutt into a four-year hiatus, one that raised questions about whether his career was finished. He returned in May 2023 with a slick heel-hook submission victory over Ahmed Mujtaba at ONE Fight Night 10, earning Performance of the Night honors and suggesting a path forward. Yet inactivity has persisted since that win, and his recent signing with the PFL in December 2024 marks a new chapter in a career that has been as much about resilience in the face of setback as early promise.

Why fans love Northcutt

Northcutt's good looks, charming personality, and entertaining fight style made him a fan favorite early in his career. His willingness to compete despite setbacks and his comeback attempt after four years away earned respect from supporters who appreciate his resilience.
