Sara McMann is a former Olympic wrestler who made the transition to mixed martial arts with one of the most decorated amateur grappling resumes in the sport. In 2004, she became the first American woman to win an Olympic medal in freestyle wrestling, capturing silver in Athens. After excelling in multiple international grappling championships (including a 2009 FILA World gold medal), McMann turned pro in MMA in 2011 and signed with the UFC in 2013, quickly establishing herself as a contender in the bantamweight division.

McMann earned her title shot just over a year after her UFC debut, challenging Ronda Rousey for the women's bantamweight championship at UFC 170 in February 2014. She was stopped in the first round via knee strike - a finish that many observers felt came too early. Rather than derailing her, McMann remained active and competitive against the division's top tier, facing ranked opponents and even UFC champions including Miesha Tate, Amanda Nunes, and Julianna Pena over the next several years. While she compiled wins via submission and decision, she struggled to consistently break through at the championship level.

In the cage, McMann is a technical wrestler who leverages her Olympic background to control fights on the ground. Her signature technique is the arm-triangle choke, which she has used to finish multiple opponents. She lands significant strikes from dominant positions and uses her wrestling base to nullify striking threats, though she is not primarily known for striking power. After nearly a decade in the UFC, McMann signed with Bellator MMA in December 2022 and competes at featherweight, continuing her professional career into her early 40s as an active fighter.

Why fans love McMann

Legitimate Olympic wrestling credentials and a body of work at elite levels of competition. Her submission finishes are technical and satisfying. She is known as a professional, well-spoken, and humble about her achievements despite her resume.
