Tyron 'The Chosen One' Woodley was the welterweight champion for a stretch when the division was loaded. A Big 12 wrestling standout, he combined strong takedowns with one of the most explosive right hands in the sport to win the title and defend it against top contenders like Stephen Thompson, Demian Maia and Darren Till.
His style was patient and dangerous - a counter-striker waiting to detonate the one big shot - which made him highly effective but, at times, divisive. Some fans wanted more aggression from their champion, and his trash talk didn't always line up with his cautious approach in certain defenses.
After losing the title to Kamaru Usman, Woodley hit a downturn, left the UFC, and moved into boxing with marquee fights against Jake Paul. For newcomers, he's a former champ whose right hand made him appointment viewing, even if his style split opinion.
Why fans love Woodley
Genuine knockout power, a champion's résumé, and the athletic wrestling-striking blend that carried him to the top.
Why some fans hate Woodley
His cautious, counter-heavy approach in some title defenses frustrated fans who wanted more action, and his big talk didn't always match his output late in his run.
